Who Needs Hydration Most?

Stay well hydrated!
Insufficient hydration can be avoided by drinking water throughout the day. When you are thirsty, it may mean that you are not properly hydrated.

Take extra care!
Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable, so it is necessary to ensure that their hydration levels are adequate.

Children:
  • Children may not have the reflex to drink when thirsty
  • Their needs for water are proportionately greater than those of adults
  • Their surface-to-mass ratio is relatively greater than those of adults and because of this they lose more water through their skin, their intake is often insufficient

Elderly:
  • The sensation of thirst diminishes with age
  • Their water loss is greater (kidneys may be less efficient)
  • Their intake is often insufficient
